Is O Level Computing Hard?

1) It’s not about memorising, it’s about thinking
If you’re the type who can memorise 10 pages of Social Studies essays, Computing will feel different. It’s less memory work, more problem-solving. You’ll write code, draw flowcharts, and break big problems into smaller steps. If your brain enjoys puzzles, you’ll find it quite fun. If not, no worries — you’ll train that muscle.
2) The theory can be dry (but it’s not killer)
There’s a theory paper (Paper 1): binary numbers, data types, testing, networks, algorithms. Sounds a bit dry, but it’s logical once you see real-life links. Binary is just your phone’s language; an algorithm is like a recipe for cooking maggi mee — ordered steps to get a consistent result.
3) The coding part is the fun (and challenging) bit
Paper 2 is practical. You’ll usually use Python to:
- Write code from scratch
- Debug broken programs
- Use loops, conditionals, arrays/lists, and functions
- Read and process data from files
The good news: you can practise till it becomes muscle memory. The bad news: if you try to “wing it” without practice, confirm stress during the exam.
4) What makes it feel “hard”
- No consistent practice: Coding is a “do a bit daily” game, not last-minute mugging.
- Memorising code instead of logic: One small change in the question and you’ll be stuck.
- Fear of errors: Bugs are part of the journey — debugging is a core skill, not a punishment.
5) Who will find it easier
- You enjoy solving problems or logic games.
- You’re curious about how apps, websites, or systems work.
- You’re patient enough to try, fail, fix, and try again.
So is O Level Computing hard?
Not really — if you practise and understand the logic. If you try to memorise without understanding, then yes, it can feel like a nightmare. Think of it like learning to ride a bike: at first wobbly, maybe a few falls, but once it clicks — wah, actually quite fun.
